Description

Over 2,000 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins call the pristine waters of Shark Bay home. With research on them spanning 40 years, they’re said to be one of the most researched dolphin populations in the world. And they’ve uncovered some pretty cool facts!

Like synchronised boy band dances and vocalisations (songs), where groups of 4 to 14 males perform in unison to attract a female to mate with. The researchers have even named some of the performances and boy bands.

The bromance continues and some of these males form alliances that can last up to 20 years. The alliances play off against each other, have gang wars and try to steal each others’ mates.

Then there are the many weird and wonderful ways they forage – from using a sea sponge on their snout to scour the ocean floor, to shallow-water tail slapping and up-ending large conch shells in search for food. They’re an incredibly intelligent and sophisticated bunch and I’m stoked to be sharing their home with them.
