I don’t think I’ll ever tire of drawing turtles. This is Buyungurra, meaning turtle in Malgana (traditional language group of Gathaagudu (Shark Bay), Western Australia). She’s a green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas. I loved working on this particular piece (which isn’t always the case!). I was a little bolder with the colours and let the strokes flow across her carapace, rather than keeping them precise. I wanted to embrace the beauty of watercolour with her.

Buyungurra is wise. She’s drifted with the tides for a good few years and she’s giving you a knowing look. It’s not a come-play-with-me glance but a ‘I see you there and you can give me some space thank you very much’. I wonder where’s she’s off to now.

Print is of an original, hand painted watercolour and ink illustration. Open edition.
