Living up in Gathaagudu (Shark Bay) definitely has its perks. One of my kids’ favourite past times is flicking a squid jig off the town jetty and getting squirted in ink while reeling in one of these. Southern calamari (southern reef squid; Sepioteuthis australis) are numerous here in the bay and when it’s not blowing its guts out, you’ll find many a local squidding down at the jetty on a calm, clear night.

When it comes to recreational fishing, southern calamari are a sustainable catch due to their fast growing, short living and fast reproducing nature. They’re also delicious – win win!

This particular artwork came together fairly quickly. Light coloured and hearted, it’s like three little squiddies went to a 90’s hyper colour party at the local rollerskating rink. My mum has claimed it as her own and called it ‘the triplets’, as she is one (a triplet, not a squid) and likes to think that it’s her and her fellow triplet siblings. Cute!
